Folly *
Noun
1. A lack of good sense; foolishness
2. A costly ornamental building with no practical purpose, especially a tower or mock-Gothic ruin built in a large garden or park
3. A theatrical revue, typically with glamorous female performers
My grandmother, Jacqueline, has been a businesswoman as long as I can remember. She's an entrepreneur with a passion for lovely and interesting things. She has been buying and selling antiques for decades. For most, antiquing is a hobby: something to do on a weekend. For my grandmother, collecting, keeping, and rehoming interesting, beautiful, and unique things is a way of life. She calls her business Jacqueline's Folly.
Jackie (or "Baah" is my family calls her) meant folly in terms of her business being a foolish venture, but so much of her work is about research, knowledge, networking, and presentation, that I like thinking about it as a large-scale, lifelong production with glamorous female performers! But maybe you have to be a little bit foolhardy to spend your time and money chasing down valuable and interesting antiques, too. With that combo definition in mind, I decided (with her approval) to name my endeavor here after her business. Whether my efforts are foolish or glamourous, well... we'll see.
My name is Kristine. Growing up, I was surrounded by antiques and always visiting antique malls, estate sales, and thrift stores with my grandma and mom. The things that I always liked best were handmade, ornamented, and crafted with care and attention --- things like carved wooden boxes, embroidered pillowcases, beaded purses, and pretty much anything with filigree. By nature, I'm not a collector or keeper of things, so I don't have stashes of china dolls in lace dresses, but I do appreciate the workmanship that goes into creating those things and I like learning the skills to make beautiful items.
Much like my grandmother's retail spaces, this blog is a bit eclectic. I've got a little bit everything. I knit, sew, embroider, and have just started dabbling in wood burning. I like making things that are pretty and useful. Some of those things are gifts; some are to sell; most I make for myself. I'll be documenting my successes (and less successful) efforts here as well as occasionally posting information about some of the things my grandmother has, but I can also be found on Ravelry, Instagram, and Etsy.
I do not receive any form of compensation from any company for this blog or links I provide.
